Gauge: a square of 10 x 10 cm (approximately 4 x 4 inches) = 23 stitches x 29 rows in stockinette stitch.
Stitches and techniques:
1x1 rib:
1st round: {k1, p1}, repeat instructions between { } to end of round;
2nd round forward: work in pattern;
Stockinette stitch: k all stitches in the round;
Colorwork pattern: follow the chart.
To resolve short row W&T stitches: on the right side, pick up the wrap with the right needle from front to back, insert the right needle into the stitch that is wrapped and knit the wrap and the stitch together. On the wrong side, pick up the wrap with the right needle from back to front, place the wrap onto the left needle, over and behind the stitch it was wrapping and purl together the wrap and the stitch that is wrapped..
Instructions
The piece is knit top down in the round with circular needles, starting at the collar. The round yoke is knit using a stranded colorwork technique, with evenly distributed increases throughout the work. The body and sleeves are knit in stockinette stitch, while the collar, ribbing and cuffs are made in 1x1 rib.
Collar and yoke:
With 3.5 mm needles with a 40 cm cable and Sweet yarn in the color 20, cast-on 120 stitches. Join in the round, place the BOR marker (middle of the back) and work 4 rounds in 1x1 rib. Change to 4.0 mm needles (60 cm cable) and follow the yoke colorwork chart, working 20 repeats and increasing as indicated. Switch to an 80 cm cable when necessary, after you’ve made enough increases throughout the yoke and it has too many stitches for the 60 cm cable. Once you finish the colorwork with 320 stitches, go back to the 3.5 mm needles and work 2 rounds in stockinette using color 20.
Now you’re going to make short rows to shape the back and shoulder (16 short rows in total). Before you start, place 8 markers on each side: the first one (to the left) should be placed 80 stitches away from the BOR marker; the 7 remaining ones should have 7 stitches between each. Do the same on the right side, placing the 1st marker 80 stitches away from the BOR marker and the remaining markers 7 stitches apart. After all markers have been placed, slip the BOR marker and k 80 stitches, making a W&T on the last one. Remove the marker, turn the work and p on the wrong side until you reach the first short row marker on the other side. W&T the last stitch, remove the marker, turn the work and repeat the process, making a W&T when you reach each short row marker and resolving the W&Ts along the way. Don’t remove the BOR marker. Once you make the last short row, turn your work and k in the round, resolving the last pending W&Ts (1 on each side). From now on, go back to knitting in the round. Keep only the BOR marker. Knit 2 more rounds in stockinette before separating the sleeve stitches.
*Note: the method used for the short rows was the Wrap and Turn method. However, feel free to use your preferred method when making the short rows.
Body:
Now you’re going to separate the sleeve stitches and create the body. Slip the BOR marker, k 47 (first half of the back). Place the next 66 stitches (right sleeve) on a spare needle or a piece of scrap yarn and leave it on hold. Cast-on 10 stitches for the underarm, right after the first half back stitches. Next, k 94 stitches (front of the body), place the next 66 stitches on hold (left sleeve), cast-on 10 more sts for the second underarm and k the remaining 47 stitches (second half of the back). You should have 208 stitches left on the needles. Knit in stockinette in the round until the body measures 24 cm from the underarm cast-on. Follow the colorwork chart for the body/sleeve trim, then work 1 round in stockinette and 5 cm in 1x1 rib. Bind-off in pattern, keeping your stitches loose so the ribbing isn’t too tight.
Sleeves:
Place the 66 sleeve stitches back on the 3.5 mm circular needles (40 cm cable), k one round then pick up and knit 10 stitches on the underarm cast-on, placing the BOR marker after the 5th cast-on stitch. You should have 76 stitches on the needles. Knit following the body/sleeve trim chart, then make 1 more round in stockinette and 3 more in 1x1 rib. Bind-off in pattern, keeping your stitches loose so the ribbing isn’t too tight. The sleeve should measure approximately 3 cm. Make the second sleeve following the same instructions.
Finishing:
Weave in all ends and block your sweater to even out the stitches.
